Ph.D. Bernard Rowan, His love of Korea

At an orphange in Gui-dong, Seoul. When a blue -eyed foreigner comes in, children jump out of room with bare feet and throw themselves into his arms.

"Sir! I know all of alphabet." "Hi. Gong-joo-nim-deul. Jarl-it-eoss-eo-yo? bo-go-ship-eoss-eo-yo."

A foreigner who is not good at Korean is Ph.D. Bernard Rowan, Associate Professor of Political Science at Chicago State University, Chicago, U.S. He is on sabbatical during this semester. In Korea, he is a Korea Foundation Fellow, Visiting Researcher at the Asian Research Center of Korea University and Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Local Autonomy in HanYang University.

He comes to this orphanage and teaches 5 to 15 year-old girls English every Sunday. This place is two-story house but there's no classroom. The class is usually going on in the living room. Without board, desks and chairs, the classroom get heated like a furnace. Mr. Rowan picks up a card with 'A' printed on it and pronounces 'A' then 12 children repeat after him. This time he shows them a picture of an Angel. Children say 'Angel' more loudly. A child does a take-off of angel.

Two weeks ago another teacher and he took the girls to the nearby park. They had fun, enjoyed some snacks and talked a lot in English on the way. Now children are practicing a play titled ¡°The Three Little Pigs¡° for Christmas. He began this volunteer work last month. He visited Insa-dong in late September and met Coree volunteers(http://guidekorea.org) ,who invited him to visit this orphanage.

"In their faces I see hope, I see strength, and I see the precious nature of innocence." he said.
He feels really sorry that he should leave korea leaving these children behind, but he must go back to his university. However he is going to write girls letters once a month and try to keep his attention for them. If he has a chance to visit Korea next time he is surely willing to see them again.

Mr. Rowan is convinced that the children are doing well and wants to say to children like this : "You are mugunghwa, like the flowers of Korea. I thank you for your expression of love to me, and I love you too. Your future is never secured until it arrives, but I see a star shining for each of you, and I hope you will follow its light."
